FTC Files Complaint Against H&R Block for Deceptive Marketing

The company also deleted users’ tax information when they sought a lower-cost filing option.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is pursuing action against H&R Block for deceptive marketing and unfair practices. The tax preparation company has cost customers unnecessary money and time by misleading them with deceptive “free” offers and deleting consumers’ tax data when they downgraded to more affordable products.

The FTC’s complaint also stated, “H&R Block deceptively markets its Online Products by representing to consumers that they can file for free using H&R Block, when in fact, many consumers have tax situations that are not covered by H&R Block’s Online Product.”

“H&R Block designed its online products to present an obstacle course of tedious challenges to consumers, pressuring them into overpaying for its products,” said FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine.
